This article is to know how we can create and NFS storage on a windows server 2008 R2 and present to ESXi 4.1 host as a datastore.

First Let us create a NFS storage on Windows server 2008 R2.

1. Open Server manager.

2. Click Add Role and add File server role and Services for Network File System.

3. Add AD lightweight Directory Services role and select add all Features.

4. Once above roles are added reboot the server.

5. Log back in to the server and create a new folder on the partition which has required space. Name this folder say NFS.

6. Right click the NFS folder and go to properties page.

7. Go to NFS Sharing tab on properties page > click Manage NFS sharing tab.

8. On NFS Sharing page check box 'Share this Folder', all check box under it should be checked except "Kerbores v5 integrity and Authentication". Click radio button which say Allow unmapped user unix access.

9. Go to Permissions tab, and select read write and allow root access check box checked.

10. Exit by clicking OK.

Adding this NFS share to ESXi host.

1. Login to vspher client. Make sure VM Kernel Port is added. But if you have vMotion or iSCSI storage added then you already have it.

2. Go to Configuration tab, click Storage and click add storage.

3. On server box add fully qualified name of the server hosting NFS storage or the IP address.

4. In Folder box /NFS/ i.e. the name of NFS share.

5. Name it say NFS.

6. Click next, finish and you have the NFS added.
